DSC_0001 is an experimental solo project by Emiel van ’t Hof, based in Zwolle, Nederland. The name DSC_0001 has existed as an alias since 2022, even before any of it was public. At its core, the project is an ongoing collection of the most important things I’ve made — a living body of work that keeps growing over time.

There isn’t a fixed method or routine behind how tracks come into existence. Sometimes an idea gets worked out deliberately, other times something starts as pure experimentation and slowly turns into a piece on its own. I’m not committed to one “finish level” either: fully polished work can be beautiful, but there’s also real strength and charm in leaving things rough. For me, a “final version” is rarely truly final — more like a snapshot of where something was at that moment.

I am fully self‑taught and learned everything by doing it myself. I don’t know music theory and I work by ear.

The project often gets filed away as “ambient”, but that label doesn’t cover what DSC_0001 is. There are ambient-leaning releases, but the overall scope is wider than a single genre. Audio and visual work usually exist separately, with one clear exception: the covers are made specifically for each release.

No AI is used in the music or the art. That’s a principled choice — AI has no place in art for me, especially now that it’s becoming harder to distinguish from human-made work. If something isn’t technically perfect, that’s fine; I’d rather have an imperfect mix than use AI.

This website isn’t “the project” itself — it’s the archive of the project: extra information, extra content (demos, alternate versions, and more), and the visual side of DSC_0001 that doesn’t really exist on streaming platforms. Some releases will be exclusive to this site. I still use streaming services in a practical way (for example Spotify), but this site is the alternative where I keep full control. Listen however you want — just follow what pulls you in.
