RIFFx_WAVEfmt

RIFFx_WAVEfmt stands somewhat apart within the catalogue. The release was built around the idea of making something more house-leaning, but without too much extra decoration around it. In the end it became a relatively simple and direct release, but one that does what it is meant to do.

The two tracks remained because they worked best together. Other pieces connected to this release were either not strong enough, stayed at sketch level, or later ended up elsewhere. What remained here was the most coherent version of the idea.

A lot of the release depends on continuity and groove. Rather than moving through clearly separated sections or opening outward into very different sound worlds, both tracks stay within a narrower frame and keep developing from inside that space. That gives the release a smoother and more self-contained character than most other work in the discography.

That contrast is part of what makes RIFFx_WAVEfmt unusual within the project. Much of the surrounding catalogue carries at least some undercurrent of unease, strangeness, or sadness, even when it is not pushed fully to the surface. This release mostly does not. It stays lighter on that level, and because of that it feels more straightforward and less conflicted than a lot of the material around it.

Nitro and us was shaped in part by an interest in how music can feel under the influence of LSD and nitrous. That probably matters to the atmosphere of the release as much as any technical or stylistic description. The title RIFFx_WAVEfmt came more from typography than from any fixed concept behind the music.

It also stands as a fairly self-contained release in the catalogue. I never really developed this into a larger direction later on, and I do not see myself returning to it in quite the same form again.
