About / Thoughts
Sleeper Angel Heaven Orbit Mother - Sleeper I is the first release in the Sleeper series. The idea is straightforward: each Sleeper is recorded live in a single take, no cuts, no edits, and it has to be recorded and finished within one day. The title is not meant to "mean" anything either; I mostly pick names based on how they look and how they sound.
This one was recorded in my bedroom. The intention was simply to experiment, and to not fall into the usual loop of "I could do this better" and then re-recording everything a bunch of times. I wanted the first take to be the take, even if it stayed rough around the edges.
The setup was pretty simple: electric guitar through my pedalboard, mostly using a delay with near-infinite feedback (around -0.2 dB). With the delay time set really long, it worked almost like a looper that slowly fades and shifts over time. I added reverb near the end. The guitar was recorded DI, and there was also a mic for vocals, though the vocals ended up being minimal.
Both went into a VCV Rack Pro patch that I built and adjusted while recording, using a MIDI keyboard and controllers to steer things. At one point I thought I was basically done, I switched on the reverb and let the guitar fade out, but while that was happening I quickly made a new synth in the patch and played for a few more minutes, and that became the actual ending.
The B-side, City Child Death, was made later that same night because I still felt like working. It is built from processed samples taken from the A-side. It is not really part of the Sleeper series concept; it is just an extra track that came out of the same session.
